Gatineau

Riding profile: A sprawling, large rural riding, stretching from Chelsea to La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. Follows the Gatineau River valley and the only highway leading to the Abitibi region. Most of the population lives in the Gatineau Valley; those at the southern end are within commuting distance of Ottawa. North of that, lumber, agriculture and recreation are the main industries.

Gatineau contains the following municipalities: Aumond, Blue Sea, Bois-Franc, Bouchette, Cantley, Cayamant, Chelsea, Déléage, Denholm, Egan-Sud, Gracefield, Grand-Remous, Kazabazua, Lac-Sainte-Marie, La Pêche, Low, Maniwaki, Messines, Montcerf-Lytton, Northfield, Sainte-Thérèse-de-la-Gatineau and Wright.

It also contains part of the city of Gatineau, bounded by the Gatineau River, the city's western border with Chelsea, the northern border with Cantley, Val-des-Monts and L'Ange-Gardien, the Montée Mineault and the Outaouais Highway (50).

Also in the riding are the First Nation reserves of Kitigan Zibi and Lac-Rapide, as well as the hamlet of Domaine.

Riding history: Riding was created in 1930 from a portion of Hull.

Minor change in redistribution prior to 1989 election. In 1992 redistribution, a small area from southeast corner moved to Chapleau and a Cantley poll was gained from Chapleau.

In 2001 redistribution, kept 99.4 per cent of riding; 0.4 per cent moved to Pontiac; 0.2 per cent (one poll in the south) moved to Hull. Gained three per cent of Chapleau in the southeast corner, an area bounded by Gatineau's border with Cantley, Val-des-Monts and L'Ange-Gardien, the border between Gatineau and Masson-Angers, the Outaouais Highway, and Gatineau Avenue (2,025 electors). Gained Alleyn and Cawood poll from Pontiac - a few electors.
