Riding profile: Chambly is located in the Montérégie region and contains the following municipalities: Carignan, Chambly, Richelieu, Saint-Basile-le-Grand and Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu.

It also contains part of Longueuil corresponding to Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville as it existed until Dec. 31, 2001.

Riding history: Riding first existed in 1830 election. In 1972 redistribution, Chambly was reformed with portions of the original Chambly riding, along with Rouville and Verchères ridings. In 1980 redistribution, Chambly lost 26,233 electors to Bertrand.

1961 by-election, 1962, 1966, 1970

Liberal Pierre Laporte won Dec. 14, 1961, by-election; re-elected in 1962, 1966, 1970. Appointed minister of municipal affairs in December 1962; minister of cultural affairs in September 1964; and government leader 1965-66. Leader of Opposition after 1966 election. Appointed minister of labour, immigration and manpower, May 12, 1970; government house leader. Abducted by FLQ on Oct. 9, 1970. His body was found on Oct. 17, 1970.

1971 by-election

Liberal Jean Cournoyer defeated Parti Québécois's Pierre Marois by 11,195 votes.

1976

Parti Québécois's Denis Lazure defeated Liberal Guy St-Pierre. Appointed minister of social affairs on Nov. 26, 1976 (ran in Bertrand in 1981).

1981

Parti Québécois's Luc Tremblay defeated Liberal Marcellin Tremblay.

1985

Liberal Gérard Latulippe defeated Parti Québécois's Tremblay. Appointed solicitor-general, Dec. 12, 1985. Resigned from cabinet June 30, 1987. Resigned June 14, 1989; named Quebec consul general in Mexico on June 15, 1989.

1989

Liberal Lucienne Robillard defeated Parti Québécois's Monique Richer. Appointed minister of cultural affairs, Oct. 11, 1989; minister of higher education and science, Oct. 5, 1990; minister of education, Nov. 3, 1992; minister of education and science, December 1993; minister of health and social services, Jan. 11, 1994.

1994

Parti Québécois's Louise Beaudoin defeated Liberal Robillard by 407 votes. Served as minister of Canadian intergovernmental affairs from Sept. 26, 1994, to Jan. 29, 1996; added minister of culture and communications and minister responsible for application of French Language Charter on Aug. 3, 1995; reduced to minister of culture and communications and minister responsible for application of French Language Charter, Jan. 29, 1996.

1998

Parti Québécois's Beaudoin defeated Liberal Pierre Bourbonnais. Served as minister responsible for French Language Charter, Dec. 15, 1998 to March 8, 2001; minister of international relations, minister responsible for la Francophonie from Dec.15, 1998; appointed minister of state for international relations, March 8, 2001; appointed minister responsible for globalization, Feb. 13, 2002.

2003

Liberal Diane Legault defeated Parti Québécois's Beaudoin by 799 votes. Legault resigned her seat on Nov. 15, 2006.

2007

Action Démocratique du Québec's Richard Merlini defeated Parti Québécois's Bertrand St-Arnaud.
