It’s all about the hair

A funny thing happened at a computer gaming company in Montreal today.
A man by the name of Marc Beaudoin introduced himself to Jean Charest.
“I’m the one who created your hair for Laflaque,” said Beaudoin, a technical director at the company.
"Et Dieu créa…Laflaque", for those who don’t know, is 3-D animated political satire that runs on Sunday nights on Radio-Canada. The original cartoons were created by well-known cartoonist Serge Chapleau whose work is found in La Presse.
“No kidding!?” Charest laughed.
“I’ve carefully observed your hair,” said Beaudoin.
Charest asked how long it took to create one of the Laflaque characters – a few weeks for the whole bouncy 3-D image, answered Beaudoin. But Beaudoin only did the hair.
Curious about the hair, I hung back to talk to Beaudoin as Charest continued to shake hands.
“No one could do it, because there were junior people at the production level. And they had a real problem with the hair,” said Beaudoin. “Because we use technology that’s fast, but that doesn’t offer a lot of flexibility.”
I asked him to describe Charest’s hair on the show:
“Ummmmm, it was difficult to give a sense of its volume,” laughs Beaudoin. “Flat hair is easy, the texture and everything, wasn’t easy.”
“I worked for a different company then. My job was to step in on difficult projects. In this case, Jean Charest’s hair.”
What was it like to meet him?
“I thought he was a little taller,” laughs Beaudoin. “Great guy, though really.”
