Bayonet impales ceremonial guard who fell

One of Gov. Gen. David Johnston's ceremonial foot guards is in hospital after passing out and falling onto his ceremonial bayonet.

Ottawa paramedics say the man, 20, fell on his rifle-mounted bayonet during a ceremony on Parliament Hill just after 10:30 a.m. ET Wednesday.

He was treated for a severe stab wound to his forearm and for severe blood loss.

Medics from the Canadian Forces quickly provided first aid, trying to prevent a large amount of blood loss.

The man is now in hospital in serious but stable condition.
