More DFO cuts could be on the way, minister says

Earlier this week, CBC News reported that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) will close six small enforcement offices in Newfoundland and Labrador over the next couple of years.
Ashfield says the fiscal restraint may not end there.
“If you don't review your processes, if you don't look at yourself internally — and it should be done on a regular basis — to make sure that you're operating efficiently, then we're not doing our job,” Ashfield said during an interview on CBC Radio’s Fisheries Broadcast.
Along with the closure of the satellite offices, DFO is also chopping staff in the province.
And there have been major cuts to coast guard radio.
Last month, more than 1,000 workers with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans across the country, including 763 with the Canadian Coast Guard, received notices that their jobs could be affected by pending cuts.
The wave of cutbacks are part of the Harper government’s plan to cut DFO’s operational budget by $79.3 million.
