An animal rights group says one of its members will follow Prime Minister Stephen Harper as he visits St. John’s on Friday.

A member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Thursday the group hopes to persuade Harper to end Canada's seal hunt and expects a good reception in the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We have had support from people all over Canada, in every province where we've gone. You know, wherever our seal [costumed mascot] goes, there's always a very warm reception,” says PETA member Ashley Byrne.

Byrne says PETA’s seal mascot will be at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s on Friday afternoon.

Harper is in Newfoundland and Labrador to talk to the province’s construction association.

Last week, western Newfoundland MP Gerry Byrne suggested PETA should be labelled a terrorist group after one of its members pushed a pie into federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea’s face at a meeting in Ontario.
