Just days after federal New Democrats lost Trinity–Spadina MP Olivia Chow to the lure of the Toronto mayoral race, the party's national director has announced that he, too, is heading to Hogtown in pursuit of, as he put it on twitter, "hopes and dreams for a better mayor."

That "better mayor" would be his former boss Chow, just in case there was any doubt.

The national director job won't stay vacant for long, however.

The federal council is scheduled to get together on April 6th to select his replacement.

According to party sources, names being bandied include, as well as Rotman's second-in-command Chantal Vallerand, party president Rebecca Blaikie, campaign adviser Anne McGrath and party leader Tom Mulcair's principal secretary Karl Belanger.

  • An earlier version of this story stated that Rebecca Blaikie was the former president of the party. In fact, she still holds that job.
