Inside Politics

UPDATED - Orders of the Day - Slow news day? Maybe not so slow after all!

Well, yes, now that you mention it, at least as far as scheduled/anticipated events of a potentially political nature, although now that I've committed those words to print (or, in this case, pixels), I've surely jinxed (or, depending on your perspective, charmed) us all, and a barrage of unexpected and noteworthy developments will shortly ensue.

UPDATE: Well, this could get interesting in a hurry, given the implications:

Oil and gas producer Nexen Inc. has agreed to be acquired by China National Offshore Oil Company for $15.1 billion US cash.

The Calgary-based firm will be purchased by CNOOC Ltd. in an all-cash transaction worth $27.50 per Nexen share.

The agreement is a 66 per cent premium over the 20-day weighed volume average of Nexen shares, and a 61 per cent premium on the closing price of its shares on Friday at the New York Stock Exchange.

In the meantime, here's the official agenda for today.

Conservative MP Tilly O'Neill Gordon kicks off today's good newsers in Miramichi, where she's set to drop by Envirem Organics with an injection of federal cash.

Fresh from last week's Asia-Pacific trade-boosting western tour, International Trade Minister Ed Fast heads to Montreal for an event hosted with the Canada-India Business Council, during which he will, according to the advisory, "highlight" his government's "broad and ambitious pro-trade plan," as well as provide an "important update" on the status of negotiations toward a Canada-India free trade deal.

Elsewhere in Quebec,  the indefatigable Jacques Gourde hands out money for local arts and culture projects.

Finally, back in Ontario, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson joins local MP Greg Rickford for a child advocacy centre funding announcement in Sioux Lookout, with Rickford slated to deliver still more good news --  support for the local Aboriginal Management Board -- during a second public appearance later this afternoon.

For up to the minute dispatches from the precinct and beyond, keep your eye on the Parliament Hill Ticker below -- or, alternatively, bookmark it and check back throughout the day.
