As predicted
in yesterday's OotD, the government will bring the omnicrime bill
forward for third reading today, thus ensuring that it will be subjected
to just two more hours of debate before going to a final vote on
Monday.
Meanwhile, in a move guaranteed to win the hearts and minds of those on all sides of the BlackBerry/iPhone/Android/other battle, NDP consumer protection critic Glenn Thibeault will unveil a private members' bill to "mandate the creation of a standardized universal cell phone charger for all new mobile phones sold in Canada," an initiative that could only be bettered, in one often battery-challenged liveblogger's opinion, by a friendly amendment that would require the installation of easily accessible power outlets throughout all federally-managed public venues.
In other PMB-related news, a new entry on the Notice Paper suggests that Conservative MP Russ Hiebert is readying himself to take another run at forcing unions to disclose financial records after his initial attempt to do so was thwarted by an NDP-originated point of order earlier this fall.
The PM will spend the day in Burlington, where he will take part in a photo op at EcoSynthetix Inc, a local company that, according to the website, "applies green chemistry to transform renewable resources into high performance biomaterials that replace petroleum based chemicals," and has received $1.5 million in federal funding through a non-repayable grant from the Sustainable Development Technology Fund. Later this afternoon, he'll attend the opening of the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.
Also on the ministerial circuit today:
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty heads to Charlottetown to kick off a new round of pre-budget consultations, while elsewhere on the Island, Revenue Minister Gail Shea will announce funding for the Atlantec BioEnergy Corporation.
Appearing on behalf of the minister, Conservative MP Lawrence Toet will join Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger and Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz for "a ceremony to mark the completion of the Chief Peguis Trail Extension."
Back in Ontario, Conservative MP Patricia Davidson announces funding to spur innovation and business competitiveness in southern Ontario as her caucus colleague Harold Albrecht tours the recently expanded School of Health and Life Sciences building at Conestoga College while in North Bay, Jay Aspin reveals new support for the Laurentian Ski Hill Snowboarding Club.
Finally, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz will, according to an advisory, head to the Imperial Barber Shop in Ottawa, where he will "slide into the barber's chair and unveil his upper lip in the name of Movember." For up to the minute dispatches from the precinct and beyond, keep your eye on the Parliament Hill Ticker below -- or, alternatively, bookmark it and check back throughout the day.
