Job posting now up for new RCMP boss

Polish up that resume, applications are now being accepted for the top job at the RCMP. The country's national police service is on the hunt to replace Commissioner William Elliott, the first civilian to lead the RCMP, who is stepping down in September.

 

CBC's Alison Crawford reported last month that Public Safety Minister Vic Toews sent a list of proposed criteria for selecting the next commissioner to the MPs who sit on the House of Commons public safety committee.

Now, the job has officially been posted on the RCMP's website and nowhere does it stipulate the next leader must be a Mountie, or bilingual. It says the person should be knowledgeable of the RCMP's mandate and challenges, an understanding of criminal law and the legal context of police work would be an "asset" and that he ideal candidate should be proficient in both official languages.

Interested in the job? Below are some of the other criteria you would have to meet:

Your report cards must come from:
-a recognized university with a degree in a relevant field. But, "an acceptable combination of education, job-related training and experience" is OK too.

You must have experience in:
-management at the senior executive level, "including in circumstances where constraints on financial and human resources are important factors"

-motivating employees

-talent management i.e. recruitment, succession planning and knowledge transfer

-building relationships with partner organizations and stakeholders

You have to know:
-the RCMP's mandate, operating context and challenges

-Canada's social and cultural fabric and diversity

-criminal law, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the legal context of police work (that's just an asset though)

You have to have the ability to:
-anticipate emerging issues, manage risk and lead organizational change

-lead in a complex accountability environment

-motivate employees

-communicate in a "superior way"

It isn't clear on the job posting when the deadline is for resumes to be sent to a woman named Lynda Naveda, who works for a private consulting firm, but best not to delay.

Elliott was supposed to step down this summer but the government asked him to stay on until September as it carries out its hunt for a replacement.
