Inside Politics

Dear Conservative donors: We're sorry

Yesterday, anonymous computer hackers operating under the name LulzRaft posted the names and email addresses of thousands of Conservative donors obtained by exploiting a security flaw in the Conservative Party website.

Today the party sent this letter to its donors:

The Conservative Party of Canada was informed yesterday that information stored by our website host was accessed by unauthorized parties. The information that was illegally accessed contains names, addresses, and email addresses of people who donated online through our web host and we believe that your personal contact information may have been accessed in this attack.  In some instances the first four and last four digits of the credit card were taken, however we want to assure you that no useful credit card information was stored in this system nor accessed by the hackers.

Our Party's internal database does not store credit card information and was not involved in this attack.

We regret that this has taken place and apologize if this causes you any inconvenience. We want you to know that we take your privacy very seriously and are very disturbed by this incident. Our internal investigation is ongoing and we are working with the authorities on this matter. We will be undertaking a review of our practices and will make all necessary changes to prevent something like this from happening in the future.

If you have any questions you can call the Conservative Party of Canada's national office at 1-833-808-8407 or email us at  donations@conservative.ca.

Sincerely,

Dan Hilton

Executive Director, Conservative Party of Canada
