Hillier: election's 'boring' and needs Libya debate

Retired General Rick Hillier says he's troubled by a lack of clarity around the military mission in Libya.  In an an interview this morning on CBC Radio's The Current, Hillier called the no-fly zone a "half measure" that fails to protect people from Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi:

"There is very little clarity in the mission but what I really have great discomfort with are half measures and so a no fly zone, and so doing things from the air has never really functioned in history that I know of.  If you cannot protect the people that you've said you want to protect and there are some questions there also by keeping Gadhafi's forces away from them, then the only other solution is to remove Gadhafi and if you're not going to do that and you can't protect the people that you said because he's still in power. Then really what are you doing?  It's half measures and that causes me discomfort when people are dying."

Later in the interview he said he was "absolutely puzzled" by the lack of discussion around the mission in Libya during the election campaign:

"I am just absolutely puzzled. We are two weeks into an election campaign, it's the most boring thing i have seen in my life and this would be one of the questions that might liven it up a little."
