
MPs are set to return to Parliament next week for what is already shaping up to be a testy fall session.
Tempers are high as the House of Commons prepares to vote on the fate of Conservative backbencher Candice Hoeppner's private member's bill to repeal the federal long-gun registry, while opposition parties are sure to take up their summer refrains against the Conservative government's decision to scrap the mandatory long-form census and purchase up to 65 F-35 fighter jets to replace Canada's fleet of CF-18s.
With the Conservative government and Opposition Liberals naming John Baird and David McGuinty as their respective House leaders, observers are wondering whether this Parliament can put hostilities aside long enough to accomplish anything beyond its own collapse -- and a federal election.
