RCMP: Cheliak 'does not currently meet the linguistic requirements of the position'

This just in from the RCMP:

Currently, Chief Superintendent Marty Cheliak is on leave, following which he will be pursuing French language training. Chief Superintendent Jeff Francis is acting Director General of the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP).

Chief Superintendent Cheliak took the position of acting Director General of the CFP in August 2009.

This is an Assistant Commissioner position, and is designated bilingual.

Chief Superintendent Cheliak does not currently meet the linguistic requirements of the position.

The RCMP has identified a new Director General and an announcement will be made in the regular weekly staffing bulletin today.

The CBC's Julie Van Dusen is reporting that Cheliak has confirmed that he is starting French-language training in Ottawa in September.

UPDATE: The CBC's Chris Hall notes that the current acting director general is Geoff Francis, not Jeff Francis as the press release stated.
