Ambrose to community leaders: Be more vocal against violence

Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Rona Ambrose is asking leaders in Canada's cultural communities -- especially men -- to speak out against all forms of violence towards women.

Ambrose made the comment on Thursday in Montreal.

Men and women are equal under the law in Canada, and all violence must be reported to police, she said.

But Ambrose did not announce any specific legal measures -- including amendments to the Criminal Code -- that would include so-called honour crimes.

Earlier in the week, Ambrose had indicated that the government was considering amending the Criminal Code. A spokeswoman for Justice Minister Rob Nicholson later contradicted that.

On Thursday, the justice ministry told the CBC's Andrew Davidson that Ambrose's comments were "consistent with our approach."
