Inside Politics

Orders of the Day - Colvin, Giorno, Rights and Democracy. What's a liveblogger to do?

Welcome, OotD readers, to the parliamentary liveblogger's ultimate nightmare --- three conflicting events, one set of thumbs:

  • As part of its continuing investigation into the situation at Rights and Democracy, Foreign Affairs hears from Suzanne Trepanier, widow of Remy Beauregard, who was president of the embattled organization when he died of a heart attack following a particularly contentious board meeting earlier this year, as well as former R&D board member Payam Akhaven and two former R&D presidents: Warren Allmand and Ed Broadbent.

  • Meanwhile, across the hall, the PM's chief of staff, notorious man-pointedly-not-about-town Guy Giorno, will make what is, as far as I can tell, an unprecedented appearance before the Ethics committee, which is investigating "allegations of systematic political interference by Minister's offices to block, delay or obstruct the release of information to the public regarding the operations of government departments" at a meeting slated to take place less than an hour after the interim Information Commissioner releases Out of Time, a special report on "systemic issues affecting Access to Information in Canada."

  • Finally, diplomat Richard Colvin goes before the Military Police Complaints Commission to testify about what he heard, saw and - perhaps most crucially - reported back to his superiors about the treatment and monitoring of Canadian-transferred detainees during his tenure as political director at the Kandahar PRT.

After much consideration, we -- that's an actual "we", by the way -- fear not, I'm not going royal on you all -- finally came to the conclusion that, given the absence of live video or audio streams from the MPCC hearings, that really is how a liveblogger can be most useful: providing real-time coverage of Richard Colvin's much-anticipated reappearance.

Don't despair, though -- we're going to do our best to cover the other two events as they're taking place this morning, and I'm sure I'll have thoughts to share on what transpired at the Foreign Affairs and Ethics committees once I'm able to catch up on what was missed. Check back at 9am for the MPCC liveblog -- and please don't hold the frustratingly linear nature of time against me.
