As CBC News first reported, the Prime Minister now has announced the resignation of Helena Guergis as the Minister of State for the Status of Women. Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose will take over her portfolio.

But he didn't stop there. Guergis also has been kicked out of the Conservative caucus, and will sit for now as an Independent MP.

The Prime Minister referred to, but did not explain, "serious allegations" that surfaced last night. Harper insisted that these relate to the "conduct of Guergis, and do not involve any other Minister, MP, Senator or federal government employee." He said he's referred these new allegations to both the RCMP and the Ethics Commissioner.

"I'm very disappointed. It's a very sad day," Harper said.

Guergis sent this email announcing her resignation in advance of the Prime Minister's statement:

April 9, 2010

This morning, I tendered my resignation as Minister of State for Status of Women to the Prime Minister which he accepted.

The past 9 months have been a very difficult time for me. I have made mistakes for which I have apologised. I want the people of PEI to know that when I spoke emotionally I was speaking about the airport as I would never insult my father's birthplace. I apologise again. I have worked hard for Canadian women and I am proud of my record of my accomplishments on their behalf.

I will continue in my position as MP for Simcoe-Grey and continue to serve my community.

Sincerely,

Helena Guergis, MP Simcoe Grey

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff called it a "pretty strange day."  He said Canadians need to know more about the new allegations against Guergis.

And as for Guergis' spouse, former MP and Conservative national caucus chair Rahim Jaffer's recent controversies?

"Spare us this private citizen stuff, and start telling Canadians the honest truth about Mr. Jaffer's contacts with the Prime Minister's Office, with other members of the Conservative government," Ignatieff said. "This is a government that preaches accountability, so let's have a little, please."
