That's A Good Question! - Parliamentary direct democracy

This week's edition of That's A Good Question was sparked by a query from Sarah Ann Peterson of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, who wondered whether there was a constitutional way for citizens to force the government to bring important issues -- like, say, the sale of government assets --  to the floor of the House of Commons for a vote, rather than making decisions behind closed doors.

The answer? No, not really -- not a formal, constitutional provision, at least. There are, however, mechanisms within the parliamentary system that can be used to put pressure on a government -- from petitions to MPs to good, old-fashioned lobbying by constituents.
