Inside Politics

Watch and judge for yourself

The good thing about being broadcast journalists is that sometimes we can stay quiet and let the tape tell the story.

I've cut four pieces of raw video that give you a pretty good sense of the sights and sounds of today's protest/Question Period disruption.

If you missed it, you can watch (more like: hear) what happened in the House. Check out the looks on the MPs' faces before the shot is compelled (according to House of Commons broadcasting rules) to switch to the Speaker's chair for the rest of the time it took to escort the protesters out.

The other three pieces of tape are from our ENG cameras. What's striking to me is how obviously media savvy these protesters were. They knew where the cameras were, and they knew what to say once we were rolling.

(One also knew not to clean the blood off his face before doing an interview with Evan Solomon. But that's another story.)

The House footage is here. The yelling starts right after Layton finishes his question.

Here are some protesters being removed, down the hallway from the Visitor's Gallery.

Here are some protesters chanting after being shown out the front door, below the Peace Tower.

Here are the protesters who were detained and ticketed for trespassing... coming out the back door of Centre Block and escorted by security off the Hill.
