The Green Party of Canada is asking the producers of a YouTube video made in Australia to remove the video, saying it could break Canadian election rules.

The video depicts residents of Sydney, Australia — where members of the Australian Green Party lead the municipal council — encouraging voters in Sidney, B.C., to vote for Elizabeth May.

"I appreciate the kind sentiments from Sydney, Australia, who are experiencing first-hand the impact of Greens in government, but we don't want to break the rules," Green Party of Canada executive director Johan Hamels said in a written release.

Section 331 of the Canada Elections Act states that "no person who does not reside in Canada shall, during an election period, in any way induce electors to vote or refrain from voting for a particular party."

Hamels said Elections Canada is aware of the video.

"As soon as I saw the video, I contacted Elections Canada to advise the authorities the Green Party of Canada had nothing to do with producing it and we have asked the Greens in Australia to take it down," he said.
