Fail Immigration spat: Who is being let in and why?

Categories: Conservatives Immigrants

In the leaders' debate on Tuesday, Stephen Harper defended his government's immigration policices, which he says have led to the highest levels of immigration in 50 years.

The Conservatives say they are bringing in more refugees (both government and privately sponsored) than before, which does not appear to be fully the case as the numbers vary substantially from category to category.

Queen's University law professor Sharry Aiken, one of the country's foremost experts on immigration policy, explains the differences in the categories and who exactly are being allowed in in greater or lesser numbers than before.

She spoke with As It Happens host Carol Off.
