This is a largely working-class and industrial area of downtown Vancouver, home to the Downtown Eastside and North America's largest Chinatown. Vancouver Harbour is the north border; Cambie Street, Dunsmuir Street, Main Street, 2nd Avenue East and Ontario Street are the west boundary; 16th Avenue East, Knight Street, 15th Avenue East, Nanaimo Street and Grandview Highway are in the south and Boundary Road lies to the east.

This riding was established in 1933 and only slightly altered in the 1996 and 2004 redistributions. Most recently, it lost about seven per cent of its previous residents while adding one per cent from Vancouver Kingsway.

Population: 106,816 (2006 census; a decreases of 0.6% since 2001)

Political History

In 2008, New Democrat Libby Davies won a landslide victory, beating Liberal Ken Low, taking 54.4 per cent of the vote. Davies won an even bigger victory in 2006, taking 56.6 per cent of the vote. In 2004, Davies took 56.5 per cent, fending off star Liberal candidate Shirley Chan by 12,684 votes.

Davies came to office in 1997, narrowly ousting Liberal Anna Terrana that year. Davies was re-elected in 2000 with a 3,397-vote win over Liberal Mason Loh.

This riding has a legacy of electing New Democrats. From 1935 to 1972, Angus McInnis and Harold Winch held sway here. In 1974, the riding went Liberal, but switched back with the victory of the NDP's Margaret Mitchell in 1979. She held office until 1993, when she was beaten by Terrana.
