This Surrey riding runs between the Fraser River in the north and the Serpentine River, 160th Street, 72nd Avenue and Fraser Highway in the south. The Langley-Surrey border is its eastern boundary and the western boundary is formed by King George Highway, 88th Avenue, 152nd Street and Highway 1. It includes the central part of the Surrey District Municipality as well as Barnston Island and the Barnston Island reserve.

In 1996, Surrey Central was formed through the merger of portions of Surrey North and Surrey-White Rock-South Langley. Then, in 2004, a smaller section of Surrey North was added to Surrey Central, creating Fleetwood-Port Kells.

Population: 123,243 (2006 census; an increase of 21.8% since 2001)

Political History

Conservative Nina Grewal won a third term in 2008, beating Liberal Brenda Locke for the second election in a row.

Grewal first won the riding in 2004, becoming half of the first married couple to serve simultaneously in the House of Commons. Grewal defeated Liberal Gulzar Cheema by 484 votes. Her husband, Gurmant Grewal, served two terms in this riding from 1997 to 2004, representing Reform and the Canadian Alliance. In 2004, he was elected in adjoining Newton-North Delta.

Surrey North had been an NDP riding until 1993. Surrey-White Rock-South Langley also went to the Reform in 1993, after many years of Tory dominance.
