Political History
In the 2008 election, Conservative Tim Uppal won a tight race over Independent candidate James Ford, beating him by only 1,741 votes. Uppal ran in place of Conservative Ken Epp who retired in 2008. Epp won the 2006 election over Liberal Ron Symic. In 2004, Epp held the seat under the Conservative banner. He first won in Elk Island in 1993 and 1997 as a Reformer and again in 2000 as a member of the Canadian Alliance.
Before 1993, this area elected Tories — Peter Elzinga, in Pembina riding, from 1974 to 1984, then Walter Van De Walle in a 1986 Pembina byelection and Brian O'Kurley in Elk Island in 1988.
