Riding Info
This northwest Toronto riding stretches from Highway 401 in the south to Steeles Avenue West in the north between the Humber River in the west and Keele Street, Grandravine Drive, Black Creek, Sheppard Avenue West and Jane Street in the east.
The riding was established in 1867, abolished in 1903 and re-established in 1914. The 1996 redistribution kept 78 per cent of the riding and added part of York Centre. In 2004, the northeastern boundary moved west to Keele Street and a portion of York Centre south of Grandravine Drive was added.
Population: 103,948 (2006 census; a decrease of 5.8% since 2001)
Political History
This riding voted Conservative from 1940 to 1958, but has chosen Liberal MPs since 1962.
In 2008, Judy Sgro continued the Liberal domination of the riding, beating New Democrat Giulio Manfrini by 11,661 votes. Sgro won this riding easily in 2006 when she defeated Conservative candidate Parm Gill by 15,174 votes. She is serving her fourth term in the riding.
In 2004, Sgro was victorious and received 65 per cent of the vote. She first won a November 1999 byelection and was re-elected in the 2000 general election.
Sgro was named minister of citizenship and immigration in 2003, but resigned in January 2005 after allegations that she offered asylum in Canada to a volunteer on her campaign. Her accuser later retracted his claim and apologized.
Liberal Red Kelly won in 1962 and 1963. Robert Winters won a single term in 1965, but didn't run again after he lost the Liberal leadership to Pierre Trudeau. Phil Givens won in 1968.
Jim Fleming, a former minister of state for multiculturalism, was MP from 1972 to 1984.
Sergio Marchi won the riding in 1984, 1988, 1993 and 1997. Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed him minister of citizenship and immigration and minister of environment. He resigned in August 1999 and was named ambassador to the World Trade Organization.
