This urban riding in northern Ontario consists of part of Greater Sudbury. The former city of Sudbury and the former town of Walden fall within the riding.

Sudbury riding was established in 1947. In the 1996 redistribution, eight per cent of Nickel Belt was added. In 2004, more of Nickel Belt was added in the southwest.

Population: 92,161 (2006 census; an increase of 3.0% since 2001)

Political History

The New Democrats took this riding from the Liberals when Glenn Thibeault beat Liberal Diane Marleau by 2,066 votes in 2008. The riding had been a Liberal territory since 1968.

Marleau beat New Democrat Gerry McInaggart by 4,584 votes in the 2006 election and also defeated him in the 2004 vote.

Marleau was appointed minister of health in 1993, minister of public works and government services in 1996 and minister of international co-operation and minister responsible for the Francophonie from 1997 to 1999.

This riding has elected only one non-Liberal since 1949. It sent New Democrat Bud Germa to Ottawa in a 1967 byelection; he served for one year, losing to Liberal Jim Jerome in the 1968 general election.

Jerome, who became Speaker, was MP from 1968 to 1980. Doug Frith, a minister of Indian affairs and northern development, won in 1980 and 1984.
