Political History

Conservative Bruce Stanton was re-elected in 2008. He beat Liberal Steve Clarke by 11,658 votes.

Stanton took the riding in the 2006 election when he won over Liberal challenger Karen Graham by 1,188 votes.

Liberal Paul DeVillers defeated Conservative candidate Peter Stock in 2004 to win a fourth term. DeVillers was named secretary of state for amateur sport in 2002. In 2003, he added the job of deputy government leader.

From 1945 to 1988, Simcoe North voted Tory. The last Liberal MP was D.F. McCuaig, who won in 1935 and 1940. Conservative Doug Lewis was MP from 1979 to 1993. He was Brian Mulroney's government House leader, as well as minister of justice and attorney general, and later minister of transport and solicitor general.
