Riding Info
This ethnically diverse Toronto riding runs from Highway 401 in the south to Steeles Avenue East in the north, between Victoria Park Avenue in the west and Midland Avenue, Finch Avenue East and Brimley Road in the east.
In 2004, the eastern boundary moved further east, from the CN tracks to Midland Avenue and Brimley Road. The riding was created in 1986 from 42 per cent of York-Scarborough.
Population: 111,867 (2006 census; an increase of 1.1% since 2001)
Political History
Liberal Jim Karygiannis is serving his seventh term in his riding after he received 57 per cent of the vote in 2008, beating Conservative Benson Lau.
Karygiannis received 62 per cent of the vote in the 2006 election and defeated Conservative Bill Redwood.
In 2004, Karygiannis took the riding with 64 per cent of the vote.
York Scarborough voted Conservative from 1957 to 1962 and Liberal from 1963 to 1974 inclusive.
In an October 1978 byelection and in 1979, PC Paul McCrossan defeated Liberal Paul Cosgrove, the former mayor of Scarborough. In 1980, Cosgrove won. In 1984, McCrossan ran again, defeating Liberal June Rowlands, who later became mayor of Toronto.
