Riding Info
This Ottawa riding contains the former city of Vanier and part of the former city of Gloucester.
It runs from Highway 417 in the southeast and the Ottawa River in the northwest between the Rideau Canal in the southwest and Green's Creek, Montreal Road, Blair Road, Innes Road and the CP tracks in the east. The University of Ottawa is in the riding.
The riding was established as Ottawa East in 1933 and the name changed to Ottawa-Vanier in 1973. In 1996, part of Carleton-Gloucester was added.
Population: 101,611 (2006 census; a decrease of 4.0% since 2001)
Political History
Liberal Mauril Bélanger is serving his sixth term in the riding after he won the 2008 election against Conservative Patrick Glémaud by 9,830 votes.
Bélanger won the 2006 election against Conservative Paul Benoit by more than 7,500 votes.
In 2004, Bélanger defeated Conservative Kevin Friday. Bélanger was first elected in a 1995 byelection. Then prime minister Paul Martin appointed him deputy government house leader and government whip in 2003. In 2004, he became minister responsible for democratic reform and minister responsible for official languages.
This riding has voted Liberal since 1935 and has had some long-serving MPs. Jean-Thomas Richard held the riding from 1945 until he retired in 1972. Jean-Robert Gauthier won six successive terms from 1974 to 1995.
