The riding was created in 2004 from 50 per cent of York North and 24 per cent of Vaughan-King-Aurora.

Political History

Conservative Lois Brown beat Liberal Tim Jones by 6,623 votes in 2008.

Previously, Belinda Stronach served two terms in this riding after winning the 2006 election under the Liberal banner. Stronach defeated Brown by 4,800 votes. In 2007, Stronach announced that she would be leaving politics to return to the family business, Magna International.

Stronach served this riding as a Conservative MP after the 2004 election, when she beat Liberal Martha Hall-Findlay by 689 votes. Stronach ran for the leadership of the party earlier in 2004 and lost. In May 2005, Stronach crossed the floor to join the Liberals and become minister of human resources.

In York North in 2000, Liberal Karen Kraft Sloan defeated the Alliance's Bob Yaciuk to win a third term. In 1988, Frank Stronach, Belinda's father and chairman of Magna, ran as a Liberal in the riding, then called York Simcoe, and lost to PC John Cole.

In Vaughan-King-Aurora in 2000, Liberal Maurizio Bevilacqua defeated the Alliance's Adrian Visentin, winning his third term. Bevilacqua's close win (by 77 votes) over PC Michael O'Brien in 1988 was contested and overturned on appeal. In a byelection in December 1990, he defeated New Democrat Peter DeVita by 7,011 votes. O'Brien came third.
