Political History
In 2008, Conservative Bob Dechert won the seat by 397 votes over incumbent Liberal Omar Alghabra. It was a reversal of the 2006 election result, when Alghabra beat Dechert by 3,328 votes.
The Liberal nomination in 2004 was a bitter battle between two sitting Liberal MPs, Carolyn Parrish and Steve Mahoney. Parrish won the nomination and defeated Dechert in the election.
But Parrish was expelled from the Liberal caucus in November 2004. Paul Martin accused her of being disrespectful and demeaning in her behaviour. Parrish was well-known for her comments on the United States and President George W. Bush. She also called Martin "weak" before she was expelled.
In 2000, Parrish won her second term as a Liberal MP, defeating the Alliance's Harry Dhaliwal in Mississauga Centre. Parrish was elected in 1993 in Mississauga West.
In 2000, Mahoney defeated Alliance candidate Philip Leong in Mississauga West. Tory Bob Horner served two terms in Mississauga West before being defeated by Liberal Doug Fisher in 1988.
