This southern Ontario riding takes in the suburban developments on top of Hamilton Mountain.

The riding runs from the lip of the Niagara Escarpment in the north to the transmission line in the south, between Glancaster Road, Lincoln Alexander Parkway and West 5th Street in the west and Mountain Brow Boulevard, Arbour Road, Anchor Road and Glover Road in the east.

In 2004, the riding substantially remained the same as in the last election with the addition of a small portion of Hamilton West and Ancaster on the western boundary and a small part of Stoney Creek to the east. The riding was established in 1966 and lines were redrawn in 1996 to add part of Hamilton-Wentworth.

Population: 122,729 (2006 census; an increase of 2.4% since 2001)

Political History

In 2008, New Democrat Chris Charlton retained the seat, winning over Conservative Terry Anderson by 6,788 votes. In 2006, Charlton received 3,266 more votes than Liberal Bill Kelly.

In 2004, Liberal Beth Phinney defeated NDP candidate Charlton to win a fifth term in office.

This riding voted Conservative in 1972 and 1979 and New Democrat from 1980 to 1988. New Democrat Ian Deans held the riding in 1980 and 1984.

Marion Dewar, who was mayor of Ottawa from 1978 to 1985, won a 1987 byelection in Hamilton Mountain for the NDP, defeating Phinney by 1,668 votes. But Phinney beat Dewar by 73 votes in the 1988 general election and Phinney won the next five elections with strong margins.
