Riding Info
This riding is on the west side of the old city of Toronto and takes in part of the former city of York. It is bordered by the CN line, Keele Street and Lavender Road in the west, Eglinton Avenue West, Dufferin Street, Rogers Road and Holland Park Avenue in the north and Winona Drive and Ossington Avenue in the east.
The riding was established in 1933. Redistribution in 1986 and 1996 added territories to the north and east. In the 2004 redistribution, Davenport took in part of Trinity-Spadina and part of York South-Weston.
Population: 104,615 (2006 census; a decrease of 6.3% since 2001)
Political History
This riding has voted Liberal since 1962. Mario Silva continued the Liberal tradition when he defeated New Democrat Peter Ferreira in 2008 by 5,050 votes. In 2006, Silva defeated New Democrat Gord Perks, gaining 50 per cent of the vote and winning over Perks by 7,491 votes.
Charles Caccia represented the riding from 1968 onward, but lost the Liberal nomination race to Silva before the 2004 vote. Caccia was minister of labour and minister of environment under Pierre Trudeau.
Liberal Paul Hellyer served in 1949 and 1953, but was defeated in 1957 and 1958. He ran against Trudeau for the Liberal leadership in 1968, ran against Joe Clark for the Progressive Conservative leadership in 1976 and went on to found the Canadian Action Party in 1997. Walter Gordon held the riding for the Liberals from 1962 to 1968. He was minister of finance and receiver-general in Lester B. Pearson's cabinet.
