Riding Info

This southern Ontario riding contains Brant County and part of Haldimand County, including the city of Brantford. The riding also takes in the Six Nations Indian Reserve No. 40 and the New Credit Indian Reserve No. 40A. It is about 40 kilometres west of Hamilton.

The riding of Brant was first established in 1903 and has been called Brant or Brantford. The last redistribution was in 1966.

Population: 125,136 (2006 census; an increase of 5.5% since 2001)

Political History

Conservative Phil McColeman defeated incumbent Liberal Lloyd St. Amand by 4,789 votes in 2008. Amand had won his second term in the riding over McColeman in 2006 by 582 votes. In the 2004 election, St. Amand defeated Conservative candidate Greg Martin by 2,663 votes.

Liberal Jane Stewart held the riding from 1993 to 2004 and served under Jean Chrétien as minister of national revenue, minister of Indian affairs and northern development and minister of human resources. New Democrat Derek Blackburn was MP from a 1971 byelection until 1993.
