This mainly rural riding has the St. Lawrence River as its eastern boundary. The riding contains the regional county municipalities of Charlevoix, Charlevoix-Est, La Côte-de-Beaupré and L'Íle-d'Orléans and La Haute-Côte-Nord, including Communauté Montagnaise Essipit Indian Reserve. In the southeast corner, part of Quebec City — south of rue de la Sérenité and east of Rue Labelle and Boulevard Armand-Paris — falls in the riding.

In 2004, the riding known as Charlevoix-Montmorency was renamed Montmorency - Charlevoix - Haute-Côte-Nord. Charlevoix-Montmorency had been created from 57 per cent of Charlevoix and 46 per cent of Beauport-Montmorency-Côte-de-Beaupré-Íle-d'Orléans. A riding called Charlevoix previously existed from 1867 to 1914. The riding of Charlevoix was re-established in 1947 from Charlevoix-Saguenay. There was no change in the 1996 redistribution.

Population: 90,535 (2006 census; an increase of 1.4% since 2001)

Political History

In 2008, Bloc Québécois incumbent Michel Guimond won a fourth term, beating Conservative Guy-Léonard Tremblay by a comfortable margin, taking more than 48 per cent of the vote. Guimond's 2006 election victory was not as decisive as his earlier wins, but it was still enough to return the Bloc Québécois incumbent for a third term in office. Guimond won the 2004 contest with more than 60 per cent of the vote.

In 2000, Bloc Québécois candidate Michel Guimond defeated Liberal Lisette Lepage with more than 60 per cent of the votes. The Bloc's Gérard Asselin held the riding for three terms, starting in 1993.

Former prime minister Brian Mulroney held this riding for one term. After redistribution moved Baie Comeau into Charlevoix, Mulroney ran here in 1988. He defeated Liberal Martin Cauchon. Mulroney resigned as prime minister on June 25, 1993.

Liberal Auguste Maltais was a long-serving MP here, from 1949 to 1957. PC Martial Asselin was elected in 1958 and again in 1965 and 1968. Social Credit's L.P.A. Belanger won in 1962 and 1963, followed by another SC candidate, Gilles Caouette in 1972. Caouette was the son of one-time Social Credit Party leader Réal Caouette. Liberal Charles Lapointe was MP from 1974-84, when PC Charles Hamelin won. Hamelin moved to Laurier-St-Marie in 1988 to make way for Mulroney and was defeated in that new riding.
