Political History
Francine Lalonde and the Bloc Québécois won their sixth straight decision in 2008 as the incumbent was re-elected with more than 56 per cent of the vote.
In 2006, Lalonde won comfortably, defeating Conservative Christian Prévost with more than 60 per cent of the vote.
In Mercier, Liberal Prosper Boulanger was MP from 1962 to 1979. Liberal Celine Hervieux-Payette won in 1979 and 1980 and was appointed minister of state for fitness and amateur sport in 1983 and minister of state for youth in 1984. Progressive Conservative Carole Jacques won in 1984 and 1988, but was defeated when she ran again in 1993 as a non-affiliated candidate. In 1993, she was charged with influence peddling, conspiracy and breach of trust relating to a 1991 loan from the Industry Department. She pleaded not guilty, but then prime minister Kim Campbell would not endorse her PC candidacy. Lalonde was elected in Mercier in 1993, 1997 and 2000 and continued her success after it was incorporated into this riding.
