This urban/rural riding is located north of Montreal. It contains the regional county municipality of Matawinie, including the Atikamekw de Manawan Indian Reserve, and the municipality of Joliette.

In 2004, only the northern part of the riding, about 55 per cent of the old Joliette, has been retained and merged with 33 per cent of Berthier-Montcalm. The riding of Joliette was created in 1867, abolished in 1933, then re-established in 1966. The 1996 redistribution kept 71 per cent of the riding and added eight per cent of Berthier-Montcalm.

Population: 108,169 (2006 census; an increase of 11.1% since 2001)

Political History

In a repeat of the 2006 election, Bloc Québécois incumbent Pierre Paquette garnered 52 per cent of the vote in defeating Conservative Sylvie Lavallee in 2008 to win a fourth term.

In the 2004 race, Paquette trounced Liberal Jean-François Coderre, winning 54 per cent of the vote. The BQ's René Laurin was elected as MP in 1993 and 1997.

This riding, called Joliette-L'Assomption-Montcalm, was Liberal from 1935 to 1957 inclusive, then voted Progressive Conservative in 1958, 1962 and 1963. Liberal Roland Comptois won in 1965, then ran in Terrebonne in 1968.

PC Roch Lasalle won here in 1968 by 172 votes. In 1972, Lasalle won again, this time as an Independent. Lasalle was re-elected as a PC in 1974, 1979 and 1980 and was appointed minister of supply and services in the 1979 Joe Clark government. In 1981, he resigned to lead the Union Nationale in the Quebec election and lost. Lasalle was re-elected in the 1981 byelection and in 1984. He was appointed minister of public works and minister of state in the Brian Mulroney government. He resigned in 1987 after reports of alleged influence peddling. He denied any wrongdoing, but was not a candidate in 1988. In 1988, PC Gaby Larrivée defeated Liberal Denis Coderre.
