This industrial and bedroom community lies in the eastern part of Montreal. It is bounded by Rivière-des-Prairies in the north, pont Charles de Gaulle, Highway 40 and Henri-Bourassa East in the east, Sherbrooke Street East in the south and Rue du Quesne, Boulevard Rosemont, Boulevard Langelier, the CN line and Avenue Fernand-Gauthier in the west.

The riding was created in 2004, from 99.7 per cent of Anjou-Rivières-des-Prairies and four per cent of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve as well as small areas, with no population, from the Bourassa and Mercier ridings. The name was changed to Honoré-Mercier. Anjou-Rivières-des-Prairies was created in 1986 from 30 per cent of St-Léonard-Anjou, 31 per cent of Montreal-Mercier, and 20 per cent of Gamelin.

Population: 106,196 (2006 census; an increase of 5.2% since 2001)

Political History

Pablo Rodriguez and the Liberals continued to dominate the riding in 2008, winning a fourth straight election. In 2006, Rodriguez won his second term as an MP, defeating Bloc Québécois candidate Gérard Labelle.

In 2000, Liberal Yvon Charbonneau defeated Bloc Québécois candidate Jacques Dagenais to win a second term in Anjou-Rivières-des-Prairies.

In the former riding of St Léonard-Anjou, Liberal Monique Bégin, incumbent from St. Michel, won in 1979 and 1980. She was minister of national health and welfare from 1977 to 1984. In 1984, Liberal Alfonso Gagliano was elected here, but he was defeated by PC Jean Corbeil in 1988 in the newly created riding of Anjou-Rivières-des-Prairies. Corbeil was appointed minister of labour in 1989 and minister of transport from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Roger Pomerleau of the BQ defeated Liberal Normand Biron by 532 votes, leaving Corbeil in third place.
