This riding is in the southeast of Montreal on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River. The riding contains the city of Brossard in the north, the cities of Candiac and La Prairie and the municipality of St-Philippe.

There was no change to Brossard-La Prairie in the 2004 redistribution. The riding of La Prairie was created in the 1966 redistribution from Châteauguay-Huntingdon-Laprairie, Longueil and Beauharnois-Salaberry. In 1996, boundaries were redrawn, part of Châteauguay was added and the riding was renamed Brossard-La Prairie.

Population: 113,985 (2006 census; an increase of 13.4% since 2001)

Political History

The Liberals narrowly recaptured this riding from the Bloc Québécois in 2008 with Alexandra Mendes defeated BQ candidate Marcel Lussier by just 69 votes. Lussier beat Liberal incumbent Jacques Saada in 2006.

In 2004, Saada defeated Lussier to win a third term in Brossard-La Prairie. He was appointed minister responsible for the Francophonie and minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the regions of Quebec in 2004. Saada ran in La Prairie in 1993 and lost by 476 votes to the BQ's Richard Belisle.

In 1968, Liberal Ian Watson, who was elected in Châteauguay-Huntingdon-Laprairie in 1963 and 1965, ran here and won. He was re-elected for another two terms and then ran in Châteauguay riding. Liberal Pierre Deniger won in 1979 and 1980, but was defeated in the following two elections by Conservative Fernand Jourdenais.
