Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has launched a possible pre-election defence of the Conservative government's corporate tax cuts, saying higher taxes mean fewer jobs in Canada.
Flaherty's comments at an Oshawa, Ont., auto systems plant on Wednesday marked the first of a co-ordinated series of appearances by Conservative ministers and MPs to defend corporate tax cuts the opposition wants eliminated.
The Tories are referring to the cuts as "tax relief for job creators," and the finance minister hailed the "beneficial circle in Canadian life" they create, giving companies more cash to invest and grow their businesses domestically and hire more Canadians.
Flaherty's announcement on Wednesday morning has stirred discussion in the comments section. CBC Community member DasShrubber sees "corporate profits rising, jobs still being sent offshore, and my personal income taxes rising." On the other hand, some readers such as Dayton are hopeful, saying "If these tax cuts pass we may be able to return the work force we had in our company before the recession." Livelylady says these actions form part of "gross financial mismanagement." "This is not the right thing to do at this time," the user writes.
