Nov.11: Should it be a public holiday across Canada?

News organizations in Ontario have been weighing in this week on whether Remembrance Day should be turned into a statutory holiday in the province.

Ottawa-area MPP Lisa MacLeod introduced a private member's bill last week at Queen's Park to do just that.

The Respect for Ontario Veterans, Soldiers and War Dead Act would turn Nov. 11 into a statutory holiday and require schools to hold a Remembrance Day assembly on the prior school day.

Remembrance Day is a public holiday in most provinces, but not in Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec.

Both the Brampton Guardian and Ottawa Citizen have run editorials supporting the idea.

"Our veterans and their sacrifices are surely as worthy of celebration as Queen Victoria's birthday or the Civic Holiday," wrote Ottawa Citizen columnist Randall Denley in Tuesday's paper.

However, the Guelph Mercury disagreed with making a Remembrance Day a statutory holiday, arguing that children will miss out on important and historically educational services if schools are closed.

" ... The reality is that making it a holiday would make Nov. 11 less sacred than it is today," the Mercury's editorial said.

Do you believe Nov. 11 should be a statutory holiday? Is important to keep children in schools for Remembrance Day services? Let us know in the comments below. (This survey is not scientific. It is based on readers' responses.)
