Seafood from the U.S. Gulf Coast is returning to markets after being deemed safe to eat by government officials, but consumers remain cautious.
An Associated Press-GfK survey of 1,007 adults in the United States found 54 per cent did not trust the seafood coming from the coast's oil-ravaged waters. (The margin of error for the total sample is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points).
Some organizations are questioning the government's claims of safety as well as its testing standards, but seafood companies operating in the Gulf seem optimistic.
"I find that people aren't even asking right now," one restaurateur told The Associated Press regarding concerns over seafood safety. "It was more on top of people's brains when the oil was still flowing."
