An interfaith community centre: Is it a good idea?

As the debate continues over whether or not a mosque should be built near Ground Zero, some have proposed a third option: instead of an Islamic centre, why not recast the project as an interfaith community centre?

Writing for Macleans.ca, John Parisella, Quebec's delegate general in New York City, suggests that the project be repositioned as "an interfaith community center with a mosque included," adding that construction should be delayed until after the 9/11 memorial is completed on the 10th anniversary of the attack. "Such a proposal would be consistent with the basic constitutional principles that allow the project to go forward and may help solve the dilemma at Ground Zero," Parisella writes.

Originally called the Cordoba Centre, Park51 was actually conceived as an Islamic community centre that promotes interfaith dialogue, according to the project's website. Along with a mosque, the proposed building's facilities include an auditorium, recreation spaces and a Sept. 11 memorial.

But it seems that some would like Park51's planners to go further. "Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf's goal is an Islamic Center to promote religious harmony among Christians, Muslims and Jews," wrote KT MacFarland, a national security analyst for Fox News. "If Imam Feisal really wants to promote harmony among religions, why not make it an interfaith center - where Christians and Jews as well as Muslims hold religious services? This would guarantee that the peaceful goals of the Cordoba Initiative prevail long after the current controversy subsides."

Do you think that recasting the Ground Zero project as an interfaith community centre would be a good idea? Do you think this alternative would help resolve the dispute?

(This poll is not scientific. It is based on readers' responses.)
