Kids' meal toys: Do they promote unhealthy eating habits?

healthy eating.jpg

Children in a California county will have less of a reason to play with their food. A Santa Clara board of supervisors approved a proposal to remove toys from kids' fast-food meals under certain circumstances. County supervisor Ken Yeager says the toys encourage children to eat unhealthy meals.

The measure eliminates toys in meals that have more than 485 calories and high levels of fat, sugar and salt.

Offerings like McDonald's Happy Meals currently don't meet the board's nutritional standards, even when apple sticks are substituted for french fries.

The toy ban takes effect in 90 days to give fast-food restaurants the chance to develop a voluntary effort to make kids' meals more healthful.
