Should Own the Podium have been branded differently?

Now that Canadian Olympic organizers have acknowledged that Canada will not surpass the United States in the medal count, some are asking whether Own the Podium, the five-year funding and training program intended to put Canada on top, should have been branded differently.

Specifically, some are questioning whether a slogan like Own the Podium was setting Canadians up for disappointment from the start.

"I absolutely think there are some second thoughts about using the slogan," the CBC's Scott Russell said on The National Monday night. "The connotation of the slogan is pretty aggressive." (Read his blog entry on the subject here.)

But, he added, Own the Podium wasn't all about medals. "I think, however, they are confident that the intent of Own the Podium was right, and that was to make Canadian athletes better funded, so that they could be more competitive at a home Olympics... I think they've achieved their goal."

Russell also pointed out that some of Canada's best hopes are in events that have yet to award medals, including women's hockey and men's and women's curling.

The federal government will continue to fund the program beyond the 2010 Games but is not committing additional money. Full story
