A baby raccoon has been reunited with its family after being trapped in the entrance to a drugstore overnight in downtown Toronto, with a little help from a CBC videographer and police.

The incident was first reported to police at around 3 a.m. at a Shoppers Drug Mart at Yonge and Bloor streets.

The store's alarm went off after a raccoon fell from the vent system and was trapped between two sets of doors at the store.

Toronto's animal services said it couldn't intervene because the raccoon was on private property. Police contacted the key holder, who opened up the store and allowed the raccoon to exit. Meanwhile, another baby raccoon fell from the signage above (without apparent injury), and joined its companion on the street looking for its mother.

An adult raccoon, perched on top of the signage above, struggled for two hours to get down to get to the babies.

That's when CBC videographer Tony Smyth stepped in. He put both babies in a box, went to the alley behind the store, climbed the fire escape and set the two babies free on the roof.

To everyone's amazement, one baby fell off the roof again, while another clung to the building facade waiting for the adult. Smyth got another box and retrieved the jumper. He took the baby back up and left it close to the adult.
