The Yantai Haichang Whale and Shark Aquarium in eastern China is the proud home to a newly born nurse shark.
The seagoing predator gave birth on Sunday and was videotaped by aquarium staff members, who had been watching the fish 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of the newborn. Newborn nurse sharks are especially vulnerable to attack by other sharks, Reuters news agency reported.
"The baby shark protruded its head at first, and its body followed," said Zhong Chengfu, general manager of the aquatics department. "The whole labour lasted about half an hour."
