Bicycles on the streets of Charlottetown are becoming a more common sight in the winter. (CBC)It may be February, but some cycling stores in Charlottetown are seeing record business.
Mild temperatures and clear streets are keeping more bikers on the road through this winter season.
Brett Doyle of Outer Limit Sports in Charlottetown told CBC News Tuesday cycling gear has been flying off the shelves. He's already run out of studded tires and had to order more in twice.
"In bike sales themselves, we've have the highest bike sales in December and January that we've ever had in the history of the store," said Doyle.
MacQueen's bike shop is also reporting a busier winter than usual.
Brett Doyle has run out of studded tires in his bicycle shop twice. (CBC)Cyclist Wesley Hamilton said he depends on his bike to get around in the winter, and there are several reasons he does.
"I don't like spending money on gas, and exercise, and I just enjoy biking around," said Hamilton.
"Nothing's going to stop me from doing it."
Mike Connolly, executive director for Cycle PEI, said road conditions are better than usual this year.
"The City of Charlottetown and the province have been doing a really good job of clearing the roads. The weather has been so mild that the surface is almost always bare," said Connolly.
Connolly said with specialized equipment — studded tires and chains — winter biking is also becoming safer.
