The amount of ice covering Canadian Arctic waters in summer declined in all sea ice regions from 1968-2010, according to a Statistics Canada report. During the summer of 2012, arctic ice cover has reached a historic low, with just 12 per cent of the region keeping its ice this season, compared to a normal of 30 to 35 per cent.
The map below shows Canada's Arctic sea ice regions (marked with different colours) and two major shipping routes (indicated by coloured lines). Click on the red-and-white squares to see the sea ice loss per decade and overall for each region or shipping route. Read more about the report.
