Nuclear Waste: where it is from and where it could go

Towns interested in hosting future nuclear waste repository and the facilities that will supply waste

Last Updated: October 2012

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is charged with finding a site for and building Canada's nuclear waste repository. To find a willing host, NWMO wanted towns to approach it. Expressions of interest are now closed and NWMO has 21 towns going through its nine-step process to determine if they are an appropriate site to host the repository. Eight of the 21 are on step 3. They are the furthest along in the process and are included in the map below.

Drag your cursor over each of the points on the map, click on them and find out about the towns and the nuclear facilities that will eventually send their nuclear waste to the Deep Geological Repository. Read more about Canada's plan for nuclear waste management.
